Palo Alto is where we see the most century-old chimneys: brick, often with multiple flues serving a living room, a study and a bedroom, sometimes unlined. Cracked tiles and missing caps are common. Midtown ranches have 1950s masonry with tile liners, and Eichlers have their fireplace with a metal flue through the flat roof.

Creosote is what wood smoke leaves on the inside of a flue, and enough of it will burn. We seal the fireplace opening, run rotary brushes up the flue from the bottom with a vacuum on the firebox, then clean the smoke shelf and damper where the heaviest deposits settle. You see what came down.

Can you sweep a 1910s chimney in Old Palo Alto?
Yes. We seal the opening, sweep the full flue, clean the smoke shelf and check the damper, then tell you what we see. If the flue is unlined or we see cracked tiles we recommend a mason and a Level 2 camera inspection, which we do not do ourselves.
My Palo Alto home has three fireplaces. What does it cost?

Do you sweep Eichler fireplaces in Greenmeadow and Palo Verde?
Yes. The short metal flue through the flat roof is easy to reach from both ends. $149.
How long does a chimney sweep take?
About 45 to 60 minutes for a standard fireplace. Heavily glazed flues or tall two-story masonry chimneys can take 90 minutes.
How often should a chimney be swept?
Once a year if you burn regularly through the winter, and before the first fire after a long break. If you burn a few times a year, every two seasons is fine as long as the smoke shelf looks clean.
Will sweeping make a mess?
No. The fireplace opening is sealed and a vacuum runs the entire time, so soot goes into the vacuum instead of the room. We clean the hearth before we leave.
Do you inspect the chimney?
We do a visual check of the firebox, flue interior and cap where we can reach them, and we tell you plainly what we see. We do not run a camera, so for a real estate transaction or a suspected crack you need a Level 2 inspection from a chimney inspector.
