Palo Alto has the oldest ducts we work on. Basement and crawlspace retrofits in the 1900s to 1930s homes, some from the gravity-furnace era with oversized floor registers, need extra time below the house. Eichler retrofits need air whips and an attic check. Midtown sheet metal cleans normally.

We connect a negative-air vacuum to your main trunk line, seal the other openings, then work each supply and return run with air whips and rotary brushes so the dust moves toward the vacuum instead of into your rooms. The registers come off, get washed, and go back on. The collection drum gets opened in front of you.

Do you clean the big floor registers in a 1920s Palo Alto home?

Yes. Gravity-furnace era floor registers are larger than modern ones and often sit over the original duct boot. We remove them, clean the boot and the run behind it, and wash the cover.

Can you clean the retrofit ducts in a Palo Alto Eichler?

Yes. Air whips rather than hard brushes so the flex liner is not torn, and we photograph any crushed run above the flat roof.

How long does air duct cleaning take?

Do you clean the furnace too?

No. The $349 service covers the ductwork, trunk lines, plenums we can reach, and the register covers. The blower and evaporator coil inside the furnace are a separate job. We check your filter and tell you what we see.

What does a vent count as?

Every supply register and every return grille counts as one vent. A return is the large grille, often in a hallway ceiling or wall, where air gets pulled back to the furnace. Most homes have 1 or 2 returns and 8 to 14 supplies.

How often should air ducts be cleaned?

Every 3 to 5 years for most Bay Area homes, sooner after a remodel, a rodent problem or a heavy smoke season. There is no rule that fits every house. If you pull a register and the first foot of duct is clean, you can wait.
