Eichler kitchens are often recirculating because of the flat roof. Old Palo Alto kitchens sometimes vent through a chase that shares space with the original chimney.

A range hood that vents outside pulls grease-laden air through the filters, past the fan, and out a duct to a wall cap or roof jack. Grease sticks at every stage. After a few years the filters are saturated, the fan blades carry a coating, and the duct has a film that traps smoke instead of moving it. We clean all three.
