Los Altos homes burn a lot of wood in winter, and the foothill neighborhoods sit in a wildfire zone where a clean flue and a working spark arrestor matter more than usual. Rebuilds have prefab metal fireplaces with round flues. The original ranches have brick masonry with tile liners.

Creosote is what wood smoke leaves on the inside of a flue, and enough of it will burn. We seal the fireplace opening, run rotary brushes up the flue from the bottom with a vacuum on the firebox, then clean the smoke shelf and damper where the heaviest deposits settle. You see what came down.

Do you check the spark arrestor on the cap?
We look at the cap from the roof where we can reach it and tell you if the screen is missing or clogged. We do not replace caps; a mason or chimney contractor does that.
When should I book a chimney sweep in Los Altos?
September, before the fall rush. Los Altos burns more wood than most of the valley and October slots fill fast.
How long does a chimney sweep take?
About 45 to 60 minutes for a standard fireplace. Heavily glazed flues or tall two-story masonry chimneys can take 90 minutes.
How often should a chimney be swept?

Will sweeping make a mess?
No. The fireplace opening is sealed and a vacuum runs the entire time, so soot goes into the vacuum instead of the room. We clean the hearth before we leave.
Do you inspect the chimney?
We do a visual check of the firebox, flue interior and cap where we can reach them, and we tell you plainly what we see. We do not run a camera, so for a real estate transaction or a suspected crack you need a Level 2 inspection from a chimney inspector.
