What we find in Palo Alto homes

Palo Alto has the oldest housing we work on and some of the most remodeled. Old Palo Alto, Professorville, Crescent Park and Community Center have craftsman, Spanish revival and Tudor homes from the 1900s to 1930s. Most started with a gravity furnace in the basement and big floor registers, then got a forced-air retrofit, then another. The duct runs through the basement or crawlspace, and the register count on a large old house can reach 15 to 20.

Greenmeadow, Palo Verde and Fairmeadow are Eichler tracts from the 1950s with radiant slab heat and no ducts unless air conditioning was added. Midtown, Barron Park, Ventura and South Palo Alto are 1950s ranch homes with conventional under-floor or attic sheet metal. College Terrace and Evergreen Park near Stanford mix all three.

Palo Alto also remodels at a rate few cities match, and a remodel with the furnace running is the fastest way to fill a duct system with drywall dust. Post-remodel cleanings and new owners after a purchase are our most common Palo Alto calls.

Air and dust in Palo Alto

Palo Alto sits between the baylands and the foothills. The Baylands side gets fine salt-flat dust in late summer, and the foothill side near Foothills Park and the Arastradero preserve sits in the wildland interface with heavy spring oak pollen. We agitate from the registers and connect the vacuum at the furnace, and we check the runs from below. If we find cement-board duct from an early retrofit we stop and recommend a test before agitating.
My Greenmeadow Eichler has radiant heat. Do I need this?
Only if someone added air conditioning. Original Eichlers have no ducts. Ceiling registers mean a retrofit attic system with flex duct fed through the flat roof, and those runs are worth a look.
We just finished a remodel in Palo Alto. Should we clean the ducts?
Yes, if the furnace or AC ran during construction. Palo Alto remodels are long and the dust ends up in the supply runs. Pull one register and look at the first foot of duct.
