How much does range hood cleaning cost?

Residential range hood and kitchen exhaust cleaning costs $169. The price covers degreasing the metal filters, cleaning the hood interior and fan, and clearing the exhaust duct that runs to your exterior wall or roof. Restaurant and commercial kitchen hoods are quoted separately after a site visit.

A range hood that vents outside pulls grease-laden air through the filters, past the fan, and out a duct to a wall cap or roof jack. Grease sticks at every stage. After a few years the filters are saturated, the fan blades carry a coating, and the duct has a film that traps smoke instead of moving it. We clean all three.

Bay Area kitchens are heavy on wok cooking, high-heat searing and daily use, and many hoods in homes built before 2000 are undersized for it. Recirculating hoods, the kind with a charcoal filter that blow air back into the kitchen, get a filter and housing clean. Ducted hoods get the full duct run.

What's included

  • Metal baffle or mesh filters removed and degreased
  • Hood interior, grease cup and light lenses cleaned
  • Fan blades or blower wheel cleaned where accessible
  • Exhaust duct to the exterior cap cleared where the run is accessible
  • Exterior wall cap or roof jack checked and cleared
  • Hood reassembled and run-tested

What's not

  • Restaurant and commercial kitchen exhaust systems. Those are quoted after a site visit.
  • Replacement charcoal filters for recirculating hoods. We can tell you the part number.
  • Hood repair, motor replacement or new duct installation.
  • Microwave-hood combos where the fan assembly cannot be reached without removing the microwave.

Process

How the visit goes

  1. 01

    Filters out and soaking

Baffle or mesh filters come out first and soak in degreaser while we work on the hood.

  2. 02

    Hood interior and fan

We scrape and degrease the hood cavity, grease channels and the fan blades or blower wheel.

  3. 03

    Duct run

For ducted hoods we clear the exhaust duct from the hood collar to the exterior cap.

  4. 04

    Exterior cap

Wall caps and roof jacks get opened, cleared and checked for a working flap.

  5. 05

    Reassemble and test

Filters dried and seated, hood run on every speed, airflow felt at the cap.

Warning signs

Signs it is time

Smoke hangs around after cooking

A hood that used to clear the kitchen and now does not has a restricted path.

Filters drip or look amber

Saturated filters stop capturing and start dripping onto the cooktop.

The fan is louder than it used to be

Grease on the blades throws the balance off and the motor works harder.

Grease on the wall above the hood

Air is escaping around the hood instead of going up the duct.

FAQ

Kitchen Exhaust & Range Hood Cleaning: questions people ask

How much does range hood cleaning cost?
Residential range hood and kitchen exhaust cleaning costs $169. That covers filter degreasing, the hood interior and fan, and clearing the exhaust duct to the exterior cap. Commercial and restaurant hoods are priced after an in-person visit because the duct length, fan and grease load vary too much for a flat rate.
How long does it take?
About 60 to 90 minutes for a standard wall-mount or under-cabinet hood. Island hoods and long duct runs to the roof take closer to two hours.
Do you clean recirculating hoods?
Yes. Recirculating hoods have no duct to the outside, so the job is the filters, the housing and the fan. We do not include the replacement charcoal filter, but we will tell you which one to buy.
How often should a range hood be cleaned?
Filters should be washed monthly at home. The full hood, fan and duct cleaning makes sense every 1 to 2 years for a household that cooks daily, and every 2 to 3 years for lighter use.
Can I just wash the filters myself?
Yes, and you should. The reason to call us is the parts you cannot reach: the fan blades or blower wheel, the grease channels inside the hood, and the duct run behind the wall or above the ceiling.
Do you clean restaurant hoods?
Yes, under our commercial service. Restaurant hoods, ducts and rooftop fans are quoted after a site visit, and we schedule around your closing hours. See the commercial page for what a visit covers.
Is a greasy range hood a fire risk?
A greasy hood is a fire risk. Grease in the hood and duct is fuel sitting directly above the cooktop, and a flare-up can ignite it. Keeping the filters, fan and duct clean removes the fuel.
