Chimneys in Mountain View homes

Mountain View chimneys range from century-old brick in Old Mountain View to Eichler fireplaces with short metal flues through the flat roof. The Eichler flues are quick to sweep and easy to check from the roof. The oldest brick chimneys near Castro Street are the ones where we most often see cracked tiles or no liner at all.

Creosote is what wood smoke leaves on the inside of a flue, and enough of it will burn. We seal the fireplace opening, run rotary brushes up the flue from the bottom with a vacuum on the firebox, then clean the smoke shelf and damper where the heaviest deposits settle. You see what came down.
