Local notes

Chimneys in Cupertino homes

The original ranch homes in Monta Vista, Garden Gate and Seven Springs have brick masonry chimneys with clay tile liners, many of which have never been swept. The rebuilt homes have prefab metal units with round flues. We sweep both and tell you if we see cracked tiles or a missing cap.

Creosote is what wood smoke leaves on the inside of a flue, and enough of it will burn. We seal the fireplace opening, run rotary brushes up the flue from the bottom with a vacuum on the firebox, then clean the smoke shelf and damper where the heaviest deposits settle. You see what came down.

Air and dust in Cupertino

Cupertino sits against the Santa Cruz Mountain foothills, and the 2020 CZU fire put smoke over the city for three weeks. Homes that ran their systems through that season pulled fine ash into the returns. Spring oak pollen from the foothills is the other seasonal load, especially in Monta Vista and Linda Vista.

FAQ

Chimney Sweep in Cupertino: questions

Do you sweep the old brick chimneys in Cupertino ranch homes?
Yes. 1960s masonry chimneys with clay tile liners are the most common fireplace in older Cupertino homes. We seal the opening, sweep the full flue, clean the smoke shelf and check the damper. $149.
When should I book a chimney sweep in Cupertino?
September or October, before the first cold evening. Cupertino winters bring a lot of weekend fires, and fall slots fill fastest.
Can you check the chimney cap on a two-story home?
Where the roof is walkable, yes. Steep or tile roofs in the foothill neighborhoods sometimes keep us off the roof, and we tell you that before we start.
How long does a chimney sweep take?
About 45 to 60 minutes for a standard fireplace. Heavily glazed flues or tall two-story masonry chimneys can take 90 minutes.
How often should a chimney be swept?
Once a year if you burn regularly through the winter, and before the first fire after a long break. If you burn a few times a year, every two seasons is fine as long as the smoke shelf looks clean.
Will sweeping make a mess?
No. The fireplace opening is sealed and a vacuum runs the entire time, so soot goes into the vacuum instead of the room. We clean the hearth before we leave.
Do you inspect the chimney?
We do a visual check of the firebox, flue interior and cap where we can reach them, and we tell you plainly what we see. We do not run a camera, so for a real estate transaction or a suspected crack you need a Level 2 inspection from a chimney inspector.
