Bathroom fans in Los Altos homes

Rebuilt Los Altos homes have four to six bathrooms, each with a quiet fan on a long flexible run through a large attic to a roof jack. Those runs kink and hold dust, and the roof jack flaps stick. The original 1950s and 1960s ranches usually have a single hall-bath fan, and it is often original. Los Altos Hills homes are the same story with longer runs.

A bathroom fan moves a small amount of air through a small duct, so it does not take much to stop it. Dust and lint build a felt on the blower wheel, the motor slows, the duct to the roof narrows, and the mirror stays fogged after every shower. We take the grille down, clean the wheel and housing by hand and with the vacuum, clear the duct from the fan end and the cap end where we can reach them, and put it back together running.
