Monta Loma and the other Mountain View Eichler tracts have bathroom fans in a ceiling under a flat roof with a short run to a roof jack, and the cap flap is usually what is stuck. The ranch tracts have a hall-bath fan through the attic. Old Mountain View bungalows have whatever a past owner added. Newer townhomes near downtown and North Bayshore have inline fans on long flexible runs.

A bathroom fan moves a small amount of air through a small duct, so it does not take much to stop it. Dust and lint build a felt on the blower wheel, the motor slows, the duct to the roof narrows, and the mirror stays fogged after every shower. We take the grille down, clean the wheel and housing by hand and with the vacuum, clear the duct from the fan end and the cap end where we can reach them, and put it back together running.
