Hillside homes and rebuilds with upstairs laundry have long runs through the attic to the roof, sometimes 30 feet or more with elbows, and those are the dryers that take two cycles. Rodent nests at the exterior hood are a hillside extra.

Lint that gets past the screen collects in the duct behind the dryer and in every elbow between there and the outside wall. Once the run narrows, the dryer runs hotter and longer.
