Single-story San Jose tract homes vent through the garage wall in a short run. Two-story homes in Almaden, Evergreen and Silver Creek with upstairs laundry vent through the attic to a roof cap, and downtown condos run to a roof or shared shaft. The roof and shaft runs are where dryers take two cycles.

Lint that gets past the screen collects in the duct behind the dryer and in every elbow between there and the outside wall. Once the run narrows, the dryer runs hotter and longer. We disconnect the dryer, run a rotary brush the whole length while the vacuum pulls, clear the exterior hood, then reconnect and confirm air is moving out the termination.

Yes. Lint is flammable and the heating element is right next to where it collects. Dryer fires are a well-documented cause of house fires, and a blocked vent is the usual reason. Cleaning the run removes the fuel.
