Chimneys in Campbell homes

Almost every 1960s Campbell ranch has a brick fireplace on the living room wall with a tile-lined flue that has gone decades without a sweep. The downtown bungalows near the water tower have older brick chimneys where we look carefully for missing liners and cracked tiles.

Creosote is what wood smoke leaves on the inside of a flue, and enough of it will burn. We seal the fireplace opening, run rotary brushes up the flue from the bottom with a vacuum on the firebox, then clean the smoke shelf and damper where the heaviest deposits settle. You see what came down.

Campbell sits on the flat valley floor south of San Jose where the inversion layer traps smoke, and the city spent weeks in the unhealthy range in 2020. Los Gatos Creek runs through town and the mature trees along it drop heavy spring pollen. Homes near Highway 17 and 880 collect more road dust in the returns.
