San Jose's tract housing from the 1950s through the 1980s usually has a fan in the hall bath and a second one in the master, both venting through the attic to a roof jack or a gable wall. Willow Glen and Rose Garden bungalows often have a retrofit fan with a run that was never connected outside. Newer condos have a quiet inline fan on a long flexible duct that loads up with dust.

A bathroom fan moves a small amount of air through a small duct, so it does not take much to stop it. Dust and lint build a felt on the blower wheel, the motor slows, the duct to the roof narrows, and the mirror stays fogged after every shower. We take the grille down, clean the wheel and housing by hand and with the vacuum, clear the duct from the fan end and the cap end where we can reach them, and put it back together running.
